Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy

VMAT is a fast, highly targeted form of radiation that delivers a full dose in one continuous rotation—minimizing treatment time and protecting healthy tissue.

What Is VMAT?

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is a modern external beam radiation technique that delivers a three-dimensional dose of radiation with a single, continuous rotation of the treatment machine. Unlike older methods that require the machine to stop and reposition multiple times, VMAT delivers precise radiation from all angles in just one smooth motion—often in under two minutes.

How VMAT Works

Using advanced planning software, your radiation oncologist maps out exactly how the radiation should be shaped and delivered. The linear accelerator then moves in a complete arc around your body, adjusting the intensity and shape of the beam in real time. This allows for incredibly precise targeting of the tumor while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissue.

When Is VMAT Used?

VMAT is an effective treatment option for a wide range of solid tumors, especially those in areas where precision is key. It’s commonly used to treat:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Other tumors in or near sensitive organs

Benefits of VMAT

  • Faster Treatments: Most sessions last only 2–4 minutes
  • Precise Delivery: Radiation is shaped to the tumor’s contours from every angle
  • Reduced Side Effects: Minimal exposure to healthy tissues and organs
  • Comfortable Experience: Shorter sessions can mean less stress and easier positioning
