3D CRT uses detailed imaging to map tumors in three dimensions, allowing high-precision radiation to target cancer cells while protecting nearby healthy tissue.
Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D CRT) is an advanced radiation technique that uses high-resolution imaging to create a 3D model of a patient’s tumor and nearby structures. This allows our care team to shape the radiation beams precisely around the tumor, delivering powerful doses of radiation while reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Before treatment begins, our team uses one or more imaging technologies to generate detailed three-dimensional images:
These images help our radiation oncologists design a treatment plan that conforms to the exact shape and position of the tumor. This level of customization allows us to safely deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor, while minimizing side effects by protecting nearby organs and tissues.
3D CRT is especially useful when treating tumors located near vital organs or delicate structures. For example, in head and neck cancers, 3D CRT enables us to target cancerous tissue while avoiding critical areas like the spinal cord, salivary glands, and optic nerves. It can also be used in other parts of the body where precision is essential.
In some cases, we may use an even more advanced approach—4D CRT (Four-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy). This technique accounts for the natural movement of tumors caused by breathing or other bodily motion, especially in the lungs or chest area. By tracking how tumors shift over time, we can further enhance precision and reduce radiation exposure to healthy tissue.
At Salter Radiation Oncology, we’re proud to offer the latest in targeted radiation therapy close to home. Our experienced team, led by Dr. Susan Salter, combines technology and compassion to ensure every patient receives exceptional care tailored to their needs. Whether you're seeking treatment for a complex diagnosis or looking for a local provider who understands the importance of personal support, we're here for you.
